Knife Blocks are so 1994

Try this instead.

Get a heavy/sturdy container and jam it full with skewers. (it should be really crammed in there, don't skimp on the skewers)

Or you can buy the real version by Martin Robitsch Schaschlik.

Is there anything cuter....

.... than a 'jar of whimsies'?

This is so charming it makes me want to be both a kid and a grandmother at the same time.

Not a bad idea for storing all those little teeny tiny things that you want to keep, but have no specific use for. (think: friendship bracelets from grade six, old bike lock keys, or that piece of mystery plastic that you just know is important but have no idea where it came from).

Now you see it...

My MacBook called me the other day and asked me to get him one of these desks because he felt unsafe in this contaminated and perilous world.

While this desk by Studiobility is no doubt beautiful, my budget only permitted for this.

Living Quarters

Get those buttons out of the ziplock baggies that came stapled to your new clothes.

Cookie tin and two pieces of card. So simple.

Manzanita Tree

Charming solution to the never ending tangling of necklaces. While this is a beautiful and professional version, the concept would certainly lend itself to a good DIY-er.

How to Store Flies

You see it out of the corner of your eye; that perfect summer nectarine.

You reach for it off the counter. Bring it to your mouth, ready for the delicious bite, at which point 137 fruit-flies surface and shoot up your nose. No good.

Here is a convenient place to 'store' them --> Glass + wine/piece of fruit/apple cider vinegar + paper cone.... voila!

Look: Lovely Labels

I'm not against labels in principle, these for example, are perfect. Good looking, modular and great for bulk-buying.

All you need is an empty bottle or jar, blackboard paint and chalk (found at any hardware store nowadays), and some tape (if you want clean edges); the perfect rainy day project.

Branches

If you can get over the barrier of hanging things from the ceiling, this good-looking, easy and cheap alternative is perfect for flats without closets.

Now don't go cutting branches down all over the place.... the best ones have already fallen. If you fancy color, don't go toxic, go milk.

Must haves

I think you can divide most people into two categories; those who have a love affair with small tins, and those that don't. (clue: you are the former if you've ever found yourself looking forward to finishing all your Altoids because your stamps/bobby pins/buttons need a new home)

If you have small things and those things need places to go, i'm not sure you can find a better solution that watchmaker tins. (they also make excellent boxes for gift giving)

Home for bling

What an absolutely delightful idea for storing your jewelry; inexpensive, effective.... but somewhat on the ugly side....

Nothing a nice piece of printed paper (check out The Paper Place) and an hour of collage couldn't cure.

(we really must find a more exciting term than collage.....)

So you're cooking dinner for you and your beau/boo, and crap! you forgot to decanter.... quick just open up the hole in your kitchen floor and grab your favorite bottle... pour.... phew.... crisis and sediment avoided.

An oldie but a goodie

Something quick you can do to brighten a room... (but adds an extra five minutes to find what you are looking for when you can't remember its hue)

Life beyond the Dewey

You know Mr Dewey Decimal (Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey, fyi) would be very disappointed he missed out on the 'Leonie Staircase' found in this North London rental (!) flat.

Enjoy!

I like to put things away.

Not in an ironed jeans, Polaroids-on-shoeboxes, indexed or compulsive way, but I like my space to be just right. If that happens to be more on the chaotic side, so be it, but if I'm in the mood for tidy, I've got that option too.

I get a kick out of finding the best and most efficient way to store things (nerd alert!) but not at the cost of aesthetics. Label-makers and clear plastic boxes need not apply!

This is a collection of ideas for those who love to stow, and benevolent options for those that don't. Enjoy!
